Along with the Backstage Handbook, this is a versatile and important book to have at the ready when producing a production, from the planning, to leadership, to the basics of construction and realization of sets, costumes, rehearsals, PR, and execution. You won't need anything but those two books!

Kelly lays out everything perfectly. He goes into detail about the production process for stage managers and the relationships they have with the rest of the production team. He uses real life experience to give examples, and some of them are quite humorous. The examples of paperwork are also very much excellent.

A good resource for studying the stage.

I got this book as a gift for my sister who is a college student in acting and does stage management for a few productions every semester. She said it was fantastic and she learned a lot of strategies from it that she implemented in her stage management work. She said her copy is now "covered in sticky notes" marking important info and ideas. Definitely a great gift for early-career stage managers, it seems!

Great book! I have done some acting but never learned, officially, how to stage manage so I just had to make it up as I went along. After reading this book I was pleased to find out my intuition was right on point and I've already been doing things the way the experts recommend doing them! I still gleaned a lot of wisdom, knowledge, and good ideas from this book though. Thank you for sharing your experience, Mr. Kelly!

I bought this book for my first paid stage management job, and it's really, really helpful. It's done all the trial-and-error work for me, so it's saving me a lot of time and hassle. It's making me look so organized and on top of things (which I'm not, naturally).
