How does everyone stop it pouring water over everything when using the steam?

Mine did this today, must be a common fault. My last Russell Hobbs steam generator lasted over 20 years ,very disappointed , Noticed that it takes ages to heat up and the light doesn’t go out.

Can you steam upright items such as curtains with it?

You can steam upright things as I have steamed wall tiles. For that there is a narrow tool to concentrate power. I have never tried to steam any curtains or other fabric.

whats the difference between a standard steam iron ?

The water reservoir contains a lot more water than that of a steam iron. The steam passes from this separate reservoir through a tube into the iron. The steam is forceful and can thus iron bone dry bedding and get a professional result. In a previous I taught laundry work so have experienced many irons. I really like this iron
