This little book is filled with challenging devotionals for every Christian believer.

God speaks to those suffering in heart or circumstances through L.B. Cowman's daily journal, written while she was in China with her husband who was dying of cancer. God uses her compilations of the thoughts of the great devotional writers of her day to speak to the purposes of suffering and trials in a person's life. Through this journal, my faith and trust in God's purposes for me have increased, and I've been able to share the insights with others who are undergoing similar trials. Unlike certain books written by today's 'positive thinkers' and 'prosperity gospel' authors, L.B. Cowman doesn't castigate the person undergoing trials of health or circumstance for their lack of faith or negative thinking, but encourages each one to trust in God's overwhelming love and goodness in his overall plan for each person's life. This is the second year I've read each day's devotions and daily I hear God's voice to me personally through the readings. I had the hard copy already and recently added it to my Kindle for iPad app so that I would have it with me while I travel back and forth dealing with serious family health issues. I highly recommend it for those who are faint of heart and wilting from discouragement in their trials, it is a great encouragement and will get you through hard times with your faith restored.

The Bible is my #1 book. Created To Be His Helpmeet is my #2 book (if you are going to get married or in a marriage and need a little "help".) And Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert is my #3 book in the world. I am 42 and I LOVE to read!!! (But I love the Lord more, so it's gotta be Godly!!!) I've read hundreds and hundreds of books, if not thousands (Grace Livingston Hill is my fav. "fun" author.) and this book has been a MAJOR BLESSING to me!!! (A "paradigm-shifter", if you will!) This hardback version is not the type of devotional that provide lines to write your own stuff in, but you just read it, one per day if you like, but I read sporadically, like every other day on average, but I'll read 2 or 3 or 4 per day. Mrs. Cowman has given me SOOO MANY golden nuggets to live my life in a Godly manner! Like for instance "Many people...are forever worrying about difficulties they forsee in the future. They expect that God is going to make the way plain and open before them, miles and miles ahead; whereas He has promised to do it only step by step as they may need." (p. 14) Or this: "When the suffering soul reaches a calm, sweet carelessness, when it can inwardly smile at its own suffering, and does not even ask God to deliver it from suffering, then it has wrought its blessed ministry....oh the blessedness of being absolutely conquered! Of losing our own strength and wisdom, and plans, and desires, and being where every atom of our nature is like placid Galilee under the omnipotent feet of our [Lord] Jesus." (p. 271) If you liked that, you'll like this book. And after reading the first 250 p. of this book, I have come to the point where I agree!!! I have given 6 away so far, and the Lord has put it on my heart to make it sort of a ministry and to give it to more people. God bless you! D in CO

One of my favorite passages from this beloved-by-many devotional tome is on the date February 4 and is about flying into the wind, to overcome its power. The devotional ends with a little poem paraphrased from Victor Hugo: "Be like a bird that, halting in its flight, Rests on a bough too slight. And feeling it give way beneath him sings, Knowing he hath wings."This devotional book is well-known and has been around for decades. It has been quoted and/or paraphrased in other publications that share spirituality through strength, hope and experience. At first glance, the stories may seem old-fashioned and too long. I suggest reading some of the longer pages as literature then give yourself a moment to pause. During that important pause, you will more likely than not experience an unforgettable "Aha!" moment.

I have loved this devotional ever since my sister loaned me her copy. I wanted the hard cover so it would last through years of use as I never get tired of reading it. The book is sturdy and well made. I’m happy with my purchase!!

Cowman's classic devotional Streams in the Desert is very instructive, encouraging, and deep. I love the variety of quotations included from people like C.H. Surgeon, Andrew Murray, George Mueller, F. B. Meyer, etc. You will find yourself marking this thing up. This devotional speaks to a whole variety of topics but is especially helpful with understanding affliction, suffering, waiting, dependence on God, and prayer. I often send this to people who I think it might help through difficult times in their lives. I recently even sent a copy of it to a friend who had moved to Asia and was having a difficult time. I would also say to try to get this in its original version not the revised versions that seem somewhat watered down. Currently the original version comes in a hardcover wrapped in burgundy imitation leather.

I bought this for a friend that does daily devotions with his family. This book has offered me so much comfort over some very hard situations. I wore out my first copy I read it so often!! 💖💖💖 this book!

Bin eh ein Fan von christlicher Literatur, die 100 Jahre und älter ist, da diese die moderne christliche Literatur so oft bei weitem übertrifft. Ideal als Geschenk.
