If acrylic goes onto most surfaces why do I need a gesso?

While acrylics adhere to most surfaces, some offer more 'grip'. Gesso prepares surfaces for a long-term bond, improving absorbency, tooth, and sealing out impurities. Without sealing, water or colour can leach through, causing discolouration.

A ground is the first base layer you paint onto the virgin surface, and the term for the material used. Artists traditionally use a gesso, but you can use a range of different mediums as a ground. We talk about a good ground adding ‘teeth’/’tooth.’

How do I create a coloured gesso?

If you want a bespoke colour, simply make your own. Select your acrylic colour - Professional Soft Body, Heavy Body and Basics acrylics have the ideal consistency - and mix with your acrylic gesso or medium to create the effect you want.

What's the point of your black and gray gessoes?

These gessoes offer ready-mixed, pigmented bases for your artwork, allowing for instant colour coverage and texture. They contain a blend of pigments to give a neutral opaque base which gives depth, instantly eliminating your surface colour,

Are Liquitex gessoes just for acrylics or can I use them with oils too?

Liquitex Professional Gessoes give a lasting, archival base perfect for use with oils when dry, helping to maintain the longevity of your work.
