Q: can this be used to hold a 8x10 stretched canvas for painting?

It held but it still was a lil too heavy for the easel if you push to hard it will fall i turned my 8x10 side ways and in the box their were some mismatched easels that didn’t hold it up at all i had to run to dollar tree and get like 5 more

Q: Can this hold a 12 × 12 stretched canvas?

Yes they do. My canvases were 11×14. Some vertical, some horizontal. We didn't have any issues. I can't add pictures to this but I will complete a review and add pictures so you can see them.
