Is the ear recess on both sides so either ear can 'rest' with the longer side of pillow in front of face?

Yes, the ear recess is on both sides of the pillow.

Is this a firm pillow, like the original one. bought it thru another seller...way too soft?

It’s much too soft for proper spine alignment. And the polyester fill has weird lumps. Terrible pillow.

Does this stop numbness in your arm you get from lying on your arm?

It did for me. You have to "hug" the pillow -- I sleep on my right side with my right arm under the pillow. The first night, I slept with my right arm sticking out in front of me and woke up numb. When I tried wrapping my right arm up under the pillow (kind of like you're holding it underneath), I slept like a baby and had no numbness. It might take a couple of nights to figure out what works for you.

I have major problems sleeping on my side do to a torn rotator cuff, does this take pressure off of your shoulder?

How can I answer this correctly. This pillow helps all the way around. It helped me with my shoulder problem. But when I had it bad, only sleeping on my back helped. Having said all this, i do love my pillow period. These pillows help keep your body aligned. Flat pillows definitely want give you the support you need. Maybe steroid shot will help??
