The Learning Trap How Byju’S Took Indian Edtech For A Ride

A shocking revelation!
The Learning Trap is a very well researched and written book. Some friends who worked with the organization did share incidents of how parents used to feel desperate when they didn't have the money to purchase The Learning App, and the same has been detailed very well by Pradip. Imparting knowledge the right way is necessary to mold children, so it is very sad to learn that capturing market share was more important than ensuring the kids really learnt.Kudos to Pradip for the 'eye opener' book. It's not just the expose but its also the writing style that makes the book a captivating read.

A great read for startup and edtech enthusiasts
Well written and well-researched book. A deep-dive into the crazy rise of India's biggest unicorn, starting from humble beginnings. And the slowly unfolding demise.Pradip has been very close to the action of edtech for several years, and he has done several pieces uncovering many details about BYJUs personally. He's probably quite invested in uncovering minute details as education is something which is close to his heart, especially K12 education. This book presents a good idea about the greater education scene in the country too, starting from the old educomp, to tutorvista and now BYJUs - all 3 had seen meteoric rise and failures. Seems like edtech is bound to fail in India.Read it only if you're interested in this space. I personally have always loved TMCs pieces, so the spend on this book was worth it.

An insightful book into the stratospheric rise and fall of an icon
I had always wondered how an edtech company managed to attract such crazy valuation ( USD 22 billion at the peak), while spending astounding sums on marketing and sponsorship and maintaining a continuous flow of inorganic acquisitions. This book attempts to unravel the puzzle. Byju’s thrived during the “easy money” period during the pandemic with VCs rushing in due to “FOMO”. And when the crash came it was bad for investors, employees, customers and other stakeholders. This book gives an in-depth view into Byju’s while also touching on the way forward for the edtech sector. Strongly recommended

22 billion dollar question - How did it all go wrong
While most of the conclusions drawn in the book is based on hearsay, it’s still baffling to witness how India’s first EdTech unicorn lost its way. The author goes into great detail to weave the narrative around toxic workplace, especially the sales team, questionable integrity of the founder, and a half-baked business model. The book brings to the fore how and why EdTech is a difficult market to crack and when buoyed by exorbitant valuations, it can collapse like a house of cards.
