one of vics greatest
Its a real shame that there are not more reviews on vic chesnutts releases here on amazon i first got into vic after hearing the excellent tribute cd SWEET RELIEF 2 which contains covers of his songs by many great artists such as REM/SPARKLEHORSE/SMASHING PUMPKINS/KRISTIN HERSH ETC. highly recommended !! actually sweet relief also got mre into Sparklehorse and Kristin Hersh in a big way also. I went on to get his 'classic' albums west of rome, drunk and is the actor happy, which are all superb, as is Ghetto Bellsi have since bought all of vics albums including the rather hard to obtain german film soundtrack. Of his other albums I think North Star is one of his most polished and enjoyable albums

Maybe Vic's Best
I definitely think this is one of Vic's best Cd's, if not his best. There is a lot of variety here, energetic rockers and tender ballads. I think some of the bonus tracks are among the best songs on the album. I particularly like the title track, "Cutty Sark," "Aunt Avis," and a terrific cover of Bob Dylan's "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine." Listening to "Drunk" reminds me of what a treasure Vic Chesnutt was. This is definitely some of his best work.

Something for Everyone
Spontaneous yet delicately crafted, unpredictable yet oddly warm, this record has something for everyone. It can rock out with acerbity or delicately lull. It's wonderfully intimate portrait of a great artist and a highlight of an entirely stellar career. And the bonus tracks are surprisingly great! Many labels reissue records just to generate revenue from outtakes that should have never seen the light of day. Not so here. Some are as good as the actual album cuts!

Chestnut's Drunk Album
I've been a fan of Vic Chestnut for many years, yet I'm just now obtaining his early work. " Drunk", is one of those early endeavors and I was pleased to find that it was classic Chestnut with comical, depressing, outspoken and introverted songs. Chestnut is an American original from the South and I recommend any of his albums. This is not his best, but it's a fine one none the less.

" I was just about as drunk as i could be"
If Vic's previous two albums (`Little` and `West Of Rome`) had been lyrical exorcisms of his blackened history `Drunk` brings the grief into the present day. The oft' told story goes that Vic and his trouble and strife had a marital spat, Vic upped and left with a couple of cronies, they drove to a farm, got drunk, and recorded this album in three days. The results are not steeped in as much imagery as previously, the songs are honest and direct, more obviously autobiographical. In keeping with the storyline they are self-berating and apologetic (`Kick My ...`). The transition from `West Of Rome` is further accentuated by Vic's bold move into distorted electrics, which is, considering his punk-folk tag, unsurprisingly successful. The `farm` songs are interwoven with songs recorded elsewhere, including `Sleeping Man`, a duet with Syd Straw, and the brilliant `Supernatural`. `Drunk`, therefore, in its cut-and-paste spontaneity, is ultimately haphazard and patchy, but as a compelling portrait of its fascinating engineer, it is sublime.
