Q: Weird question, would this prevent a dog from licking around the rear end and maybe back paws? Looking for an alternative to cone of shame.

Sorry but probably not. I couldn't tell you for sure because it never stayed on my dogs head for more than 20 seconds :( but even if your dog wears it, they can still turn their head and reach back. The only thing is the hair from the mane would get in the way. I'd stick with the cone of shame. My niece bedazzled her dogs so it was pretty : )
