Spiritually, a very deep book. Not easy reading. Katagiri sits within the Eye of Universal Life.
I am used to reading Soto Zen books like this one based on the teachings of Dogen. Yet, this, at first, was not an easy book for me to hang with. But I now realize it is a great book...certainly for me. Even after practicing Zen sitting and its wisdom teachings for many years, I never gave up the hope that some Christians would tune back in to the deeper end of Christian practice if they were open to the deep wisdom teachings of Zen Buddhism. Most Christians I run into locally here don't even know who Thomas Merton is. This makes me sad. Will Merton's valiant effort to get Christianity to go back into deeper waters fade in time to just a few? This book by Zen Master Dainin katagiri, who I knew personally, could, in the right hands, serve up added depth to practicing Christian contemplatives. Maybe someone out there would give a public talk based on this book called, "Zen Christianity: Touching the Depth of Human Life."

Beautifully written advice on how to practice and live everyday life
Another excellent book compiled from Katagiri roshi's talks. Katagiri had a knack for uniquely expressing Dharma in a warmhearted, playful sense that makes it simple to deepen one's understanding of the Way. Many of the expressions he uses like "relax your frontal lobe", or "throw away your thinking" help me stop over intellectualize the teaching. He reminds us that all we really need to do is to "shut up and sit down"! I think this book, along with "Each Moment is the Universe" should have a cozy spot on your Zen bookshelf :-)All the best and much peace to you!

Mildly confusing at times, but very good.
I took a lot of very good messages from this book. It’s a little hard to keep up with some of the more contradictory parts of it and you may find yourself going back to re-read a paragraph to make another attempt at understanding what you just read, but the perspective is very helpful. I do recommend this book.

Truly the voice of Katagiri Roshi
This is the best book of Katagiri Roshi's teachings. As a longtime student who attended most of his lectures over a period of fifteen years, I hear his voice when I read this edited version of his talks..

One of my favorite Dharma books
The teachings in this book range from the profound to the poetic, from the deep to the simple, from the complex to the practical. Katagiri Roshi expresses the Dharma in very unique words imbued with wisdom. It was a delight to read it, specially on retreat with a clear mind.
