PALMGREN 9661201 Arbor Press with Depth Stop 2 Ton

Seems like a good unit. As in the manual, you'll need to bolt it down for max leverage. It tips-up easy if not fastened to a table. I can lift this on/off my welding table with little effort. I like that one end of the ram is flat and the other has a magnetic hole for the tools. Purple Power powder coat makes the shop more pleasant to work in. I can almost smell lavender while pressing in bearings. I'd buy this product again. The only minor quibble is the adjustment screws for the ram friction. They just use some dog-point set screws to take out slop. Since it a steel-to-steel adjustment, its kinda finicky. It'd be nice to see some sort of bronze bushing / spring setup in there...but no big deal.

This review is kind by only dropping one star - I heart says three-stars, not four. I did a lot of pre-order research on this product and expected much better quality than received. I have no previous experience with Palmgren but called over two business days and no-one ever got back to me on the issues - lots of little problems, but it would work generally. The question with a premium Limited Lifetime Warranty product is - there should be no more than one, if one at all, small defect - I found six. Prominent, badly crooked nameplate. Fittings don't fit as pictured in the listing. Not fully assembled as claimed on the manufacturer's website. Covered in thick cosmoline which would have been OK by itself, but had to be cleaned. Ways had to be steel wooled clean. Press bar was jammed, and because it was so sloppily misassembled, it did not come apart easily. It was also mounted upside down and had no magnet as promised to hold the press end-fittings. One of those fittings wouldn't fit in the storage holes.I got it working after 90 minutes of disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, adjustment, and lubrication. Then I tried a known under 1-Ton fitting - I could even do this with my shop vise - and the "2-Ton" press couldn't achieve the job.If you care more about the brand than the tool, this is all for you.

I make, belts, holsters, bracelets, wallets, guitar straps and more. I use this for rivets, hole punch, stamping my makers mark, and cutting ends. It has stopped the loud pounding my wife didn't like and has made my work much more precise. I use a magnet on the end and my tools simply stick to it. If you are a leather worker this thing is a must!!!

This press may have been around for a while, but it does nowhere near 2 tons. With the provided handle, a 200lb guy hanging on the end could only generate about 1400lbs, and the frame was noticeably opening. Like 1/8" deflection. The manual says don't apply more than 90 lbs. 90lbs would only generate about 630lbs! Had to remachine the ram to make it run smoothly too. A decent price for a press, I don't think it will break, but it won't press 2 tons.

If you are needing a good press this is the one, very well built!
