The material is well organized and explains software engineering concepts in a way that’s easy to understand, even if you’re new to the subject. The examples helped reinforce what I was learning in class, and I found myself referring back to the book while working on assignments and projects. This is an excellent overview of the major topics in Software Engineering as they exist at the end of 2011. If you want more information on a topic, at the end of each chapter is a Further Reading section that points to some of the best resources in Software Engineering. Showing this books value, this book is referenced numerous times in the IEEE's Software Engineering Body of Knowledge. I believe it's referenced more than any other source.I have both the 8th and 9th editions of this book. I am working on a degree in software engineering, but I have been writing software professionally for 25 years. I found his approach well balanced. After working in the industry for a while, I have learned that there are so many ways to do things and most of them are valuable or applicable in different situations. It is always frustrating to hear an author tell you how one approach, technique, or platform is the right one. In my mind, they are amateurs and I usually will weigh their opinions accordingly. Somerville has a fairly balanced and pragmatic approach to the material. I might have spent more time on certain sections and less on others, but in general I thought this was a good survey on a very complex and large topic.
