Do these bowls get hot in the microwave?

They are porcelain. If you have used a bowl before, they will behave the same way. IF for some reason you have not used a porcelain bowl before, and this is your first time; then yes, they do get hot in the microwave depending on the length of heating time. They do not melt, and will not break, but will get hot, but not hotter than the food or content in the bowl. Use a towel to remove from the microwave if such temperatures occur. You will find this a common experience with most non-plastic bowls.

The bowls are very nice but depending on the severity of the arthritis you might want something a little lighter. You can always try! Sorry not much help
