Zambia (Bradt Travel Guides)

Comprehensive
I bought 3 books on Zambia before my trip - this one was by far the best. Very comprehensive, contained all that info that I needed. Some of the prices were off (the exchange rate vs. the dollar is now much better than at the time of printing which explains some of the difference (about 3700 kwacha to the dollar today, July, 2000) so the delta was always favorable). Two lodges were estimated to be about $200-$250/night, we found $100/night. Zambia, we learned as probably the best untouched reserves for gaming. Amazing, beautiful places, truly remote. Be aware that moving from one place to another in Zambia takes many hours on the road, and the roads are not good. I'd advise hiring someone to fly you to the remote airstrips rather than the typical 8 hour surface transfers. Also, remember to sit back and relax: the "Z Factor", as they call it locally, means that nothing happens on schedule : ) If you're prepared for this mentally, you'll have a most enjoyable trip!

Zambia Safari
We just returned from a three week safari to Zambia, the book was invaluable; we used it frequently during the trip. We found the data in the book were accurate and provided us outstanding intelligence about each area of the country we visited. If you are going to Zambia or thinking about going, this book is a must read.Bill

Thorough, but very negative writer
I enjoyed this book but was extremely disappointed by the pessimism displayed by the writer. While he was extremely thorough in his examination of the many great places and activities in Zambia, his writing failed to get me excited about my trip. In fact, it made me dread going. Fortunately, once I got here, I realized that Zambia is a WONDERFUL country and the negatives are few and farUnfortunately, there aren't that many alternatives out there for this book. I would recommend talking to people who have traveled there over purchasing this book. They can give you an accurate portrayal of what Zambia is really like. And trust me -- it is great.

Still not very good
The first edition of this guide book was quite literally the worst guide book I’ve ever encountered. It seemed like the author had never been to most of the places he was writing about and had absolutely no idea what someone who was actually going to those places might need to know. Over the years the guide has improved somewhat. It’s still not very good. It’s still hugely slanted towards rich tourists with their own vehicle, rather than backpackers dependent on lifts and public transport, but it seems the author at least has a vague idea that there might be a few visitors out there who need to know where the banks and the bus stations are and where to sleep and eat if you’re not on a budget of a few hundred dollars a day. So, well done for that. Hopefully Lonely Planet or Rough Guide will come up with a Zambia specific guide book before too long, or Bradt will ask Philip Briggs to take over this one, but until then, unfortunately, this is as good as it gets.

Very good country guide, in the absence of a specific RG/LP guide
Everyone has their favourite travel book series, and I admit that mine is Rough Guide. However, when I discovered there was no country-specific guide to Zambia, I opted for this Bradt guide. I wasn't disappointed. It is very much in the RG/Lonely Planet mould, but is arguably even more comprehensive. There are a lot of listings (accommodation, restaurants), and a good information section. I particularly liked the wildlife guide in Appendix 1. I would definitely buy Bradt guides in the future.

I love Bradt Travel Guides
I love BradtTravel Guides. Not glossy and showy...just down to earth, basic, important and useful information that helps you to understand the country you are visiting. Written by people who have actually been there. I buy one for every destination I can.

Great guide to explore Zambia on your own
Very good guide with lots of information (and accurate) including prices of buses. One typo to note if you want to go to Simonga Village, near Livingstone, p195. The phone number to book a tour with the chief of the tribe ends in 2, not 8 like it says in the book. So the real num is 0977 870542
