Great knife
Extremely sharp. High carbon not stainless so expect to see some discoloration and provide a little maintenance Ie, mineral oil and thoroughly dry after use. I think I could shave with this thing. Great purchase.

Cost effective, efficient, high quality
Absolutely fantastic knife. I’ve always disliked the look of these knives and knives like it but after randomly seeing a YouTube review of them and hearing the price and quality of these knives I thought what the heck. Their flagship is $10 so I bought it, received it today, checked it out, instantly hooked. Anything that can slice things this easily is welcome in my home. I even like the sheath that most complain about. The look of the knife and sheath grew on me in about 20 seconds after testing this bad boy out. Update: After a few days of owning this knife I’ve done quite a bit of reading about Moras. Since then I’ve purchased another 511 carbon, a Companion in SS, and a Bushcraft. The companion is by far my favorite for every day tasks. The Bushcraft is heavy duty and a true workhorse! I’m considering buying the Companion HD as well. I originally planned on keeping the polished look but thought it would be wise to force a patina just in case. Put the vinegar down and use mustard! Clean with isopropyl alcohol, dry thoroughly, use mustard any way you want. Let mustard sit for 15-20 mins on each side. Rinse with warm water and dish soap. Dry thoroughly. Apply a thin line of oil. Enjoy. I applied mustard twice on each side. Obviously it has to be mustard with vinegar. Check out pics.

A great bang for the buck bushcrafting knife
Pros: Cheap, Durable, Good grip, Fingergard, Sharp. Cons: Rat Tang, Thin, Sheath, Rounded spine This small little knife can do almost anything a high dollar bushcraft knife can do at a fraction of the price. This knife is definitely a work horse and will do almost anything you can think of while bushcrafting. With its razor sharp factory edge, it can easily create feather stick and while it can baton wood, I would advise against it. Seeing how it is a thin blade and not full tang. The Mora 511 makes a great starter / backup bushcraft knife. At around $10 dollars at the time of the review, the Mora 511 is one of the best bang for the buck knife you can get that is exceptionally good. It will cut almost anything and it came sharper than some razors I have had. The blade is made out of carbon steel which has the added benefits of being easy to sharpen and the ability to hold an edge longer than your traditional stainless steel knives. One minor problem I have with the Mora 511 is the rounded spine of the knife, making it extremely difficult to strike a ferrocerium rod. In fact grinding the spine down to a 90 degree angle was one of the first things I did with this knife. I have put this knife through its paces in the woods as well as in the kitchen. After batoning and processing wood. I was still able to easily create fine feather sticks to start my fire. Even after all this, the Mora 511 maintained its edge and I was able to cut fine thin slices of tomatoes. In field, it is small enough to be a great fillet knife for fish and can be used as a skinning knife on small and large game. For the money you cannot beat this knife you can find it anywhere for around ten dollars. If you are beginner looking to get into bushcrafting, the Mora 511, is a great place to start. Even if you are a more experienced bushcrafter with a more expensive bushcrafting knife, the Mora 511 is a great back up knife.

Great starter knife
Incredibly sharp out of box, spent some time whittling, and the edge held up perfectly, blade is fine for small bushcraft, or hobby needs, perfect knife to leave in your vehicle, or bug out back, it's very light weight, and the sheath holds it snug.

Know what you are buying - Carbon Steel!
Some people put their cast iron pans in the dishwasher. Some buy $5 pocket flashlights and complain they aren’t bright enough. Then there are the guys who buy a $12 carbon steel knife and bellyache because it rusts when put away wet. The issue is called PEBIAC — “problem exists between item and chair.” Carbon steel knives demand maintenance. They are not stainless steel. But they are amazing blades for the person who knows what they are buying (metal that easily rusts), knows how to care for the blade (force patina and routine oiling), and employ the appropriate use for a 3.6” blade with partial tang (the people using this knife to baton are inviting breakage). This Mora 511 is a very well made knife and fantastic for a variety of camp uses, including food prep, whittling, cutting fire starter branches, rope work, and more. But, it’s not a hard core bush crafting blade. Folks who want to split logs with this knife need to think twice (and rethink their budget!). Moras speak for themselves in simplicity, quality, and value. It’s not a cheap, poorly made, product punched out in distant lands with $2 hr workers. You can do a lot with it…for…just…12 bucks. But when you start comparing it to a $200 knife with a 5-6 inch blade and full tang construction…well, you are fooling yourself and looking silly. Carbon steel knives are legendary for their durability and edge, not just with outdoorsmen, but professional chefs as well. They are great knives for people who know how to care for them. If you leave your knives out in the rain, or put them in your tackle box wet, or want to leave them in the sink over night…buy stainless steel. Not carbon. But if you desire a quality blade at a good price and enjoy the “liturgy” of caring for your tools, this Mora is a fun little knife. Every collector should have a Mora or two. Do some research on carbon steel before you buy. The molded handle feels nice in the hand because of its good size, fit, and finish. The blade is sharp to start with and can get plenty edgier with a decent stone. Take the time to force patina it, and you will save yourself some grief. And whatever you do, dry it when it gets wet and rub some oil on it from time to time. I really like this multi-use, good looking, all-you-need knife for hiking, camping, and workbench needs. I give it an all-around 4 star rating. But if you strictly compare it to similarly priced knives with like features, it’s a 5.
