Q: What color is the inside of the bag? I am looking for a lighter color such as beige vs black or navy blue.

Q: Does it zip close on top?

It zips but the top is not completely enclosed. The zipped top has openings on the sides. Zipper top is not functional and has no purpose with the openings.

Q: Would this bag be ok for the beach?

I think so, though the inside pockets are mostly small on one side with two larger ones on the other. It has two water bottle pouches on the outside. However, it has a sturdy bottom, is water resistant, and has plenty of space (depending on how much you bring). Get the larger bag if you take a lot. Two beach towels rolled and stood with two bags of snacks should be fine, maybe more.
