Are the straps secure enough to run in?

I don't know....I sit down and lift straight up from the hip. My knees do not like to kneel!! Have fun!

Does the strong chemical smell go away completely?

I never noticed any chemical smell on my ankle weights when I first received them. I just gave them a test sniff and nothing but a little sweat smell from using them.

What is the difference between this model and the newer model?

I am not sure if there is any difference besides the pattern. I like the weights very much but you might have to air them a bit before using them as there is a strong rubbery smell when they are new.

Can these weights be worn on the thighs ?

no. they are only suitable for the measurement around the ankle.
