I received no canister, is that a separate item?

Yes. Fuel canisters are consumables and sold separately.

Does this only work with primus fuel? i can't get that where i live. can i use another brand of fuel?

There are several producers. Look for Coleman.

Can you use a different brand of propane or does it specifically have to be primus?

You can use any brand you like. They all have the same screw connections.
