Outlander - DVD

Good movie

My husband and I really like this film. We watched it first on YouTube and had to add it to our collection.

Imagine if a Space Empire made up of Humanoids, who seed the Universe with their kind, decide to take over a planet that will sustain life but already has tough-looking carnivorous beasties on it. They think the beasts are mindless brutes and kill them all off in mass genocide (just for a planetary land grab). Except they didn't kill them all and the survivor beast kills off the human colony and stows away on a spaceship to earth. One soldier survives the trip along with the beast and inadvertently brings it to Earth in the era of the Vikings. What follows is a retelling of the Beowulf saga; except Beowulf is the Space Soldier dude and Grendel is a Space monster (imagine a "toad-like" cross between Alien and Predator).This movie only made about 7 million US dollars on its release and it cost about 40 million more to make it so it was a complete failure at the box office. But it is actually quite good. Better than the Alien Vs Predator schlock. The actors are excellent. Jim Caviezel is the haunted space soldier, grieving for the death of loved ones. He perfectly displays the mix of grief, and an eagerness for retribution, along with toughness and sometimes despair. Add the late-great John Hurt, the lovely Sophia Myles, Ron Perlman, and Jack Huston, and folks, there ain't nothing wrong with the quality of the acting. The sets of the Viking village are almost alone worth watching for historical accuracy. As are the costumes and props (swords, helmets, etc.) The CGI is a little dated, but so what? It works! Folks, it's called "suspension of disbelief" for a reason, you need it to view any work of Hgh Fantasy or Science Fiction. The one thing that I think did this film in was that it had an "R" rating and that was just for the violence. Their is no nudity or sex in it, and only a sprinkling of Anglo-Saxon profanity. If the filmmakers had toned down the decapitations and amputations they probably could have gotten a PG rating and reached a significant number of 11 to 17-year-old boys in its release and at least could have broken even in $$$.

I loved the story. Thought it would be a predictable monster movie but it fooled me.

I’ve watched this movie twice, thirteen years apart, and still came to the same conclusion…it’s almost good, but not. I loved the monster. John Hurt was incredible. Ron Perlman was wasted in a bit part that left him with little to do...The problem remains, the lead character/actor was dull and unresponsive. I just can’t get past his wooden performance. With different casting I would have loved this movie.

Internally consistent, gives a nod to historical facts (think Uthbert swords) and sets the stage for the tales that could become the legend of Beowulf (think diving down to the bottom of the mere for a sword - or sword metal as the case may be). The writers put a lot of thought into this movie. Most of the reviewers missed the idea that Earth was a planet "seeded" by Kainen's people in his distant past. He may technically be an alien, but with common ancestors to the earth humans. The alien that tags along on his spaceship, causing it to crash into Iron Age Norway, must be exterminated. The plot is tightly woven and internally consistent if you pay attention to the details. The overall plot offers an imaginative theory of the inspiration of Beowulf having been ancient aliens. Visually stunning, well acted, and great CGI -- had the critics not tanked it, this movie could have, and should have, been a masterpiece of the sci-fi genre. I am sorry it took me 12 years to discover it.

Para los amantes del género es muy agradable y recomendable de ver, pues el guion es notable, la acción trepidante y los artistas interpretan a la perfección.

Also ich hab den Film die Tage im TV gesehen und gleich bei Amazon als Blu Ray Ausgabe bestellt. Klar, die Thematik des Films ist im Grunde vornehmlich für Fans des Mittelalter- und Fantasygenres ausgelegt, die wenigen Ausschweifungen in die SciFi Thematik am Anfang und Ende des Films fallen als nettes Gimmick auch gar nicht so sehr ins Gewicht, machen die Geschichte aber durchaus ein Stück weit interessanter. Ist an sich ein recht interessanter Plot und für das Budget recht ausdrucksstark dargestellt, einschließlich der Rückblicke auf den Heimatplaneten.Eine schlechte schauspielerische Leistung kann ich wie andere hier allerdings nicht bemängeln. Auch wenn der Hauptharakter Kainan teilweise etwas steif wirkt und anderweitig hätte sicher noch besser besetzt werden können, so darf man nicht vergessen, dass wir hier von einem Low Budget Film mit etwa 45 Millionen Doller reden, der trotz allem super umgesetzt und auch schauspielerisch meines Erachtens sehr gut und passend besetzt wurde.Würde das Ganze qualitativ und umsetzungstechnisch in eine Reihe stellen mit Filmen wie "Solomon Kane" oder "Der Adler der Neunten Legion". Geschichte top, Umsetzung top, Besetzung gut und Effekte für das Budget ebenfalls gut. Als Fan von "Herr der Ringe" und "Avatar" bin ich ja eigentlich etwas verwöhnt, aber Filme mit einem Budget von über 200 Millionen Doller kann man eben mit solch einer Kleinproduktion wie "Outlander" nicht vergleichen.Fazit: Ich find den Film toll, einzig der Preis für die Blu Ray Version ist noch etwas abgehoben für einen Film der schon 2010 erschienen ist. Normalerweise liegen die Preise für solche Filme im Handel für die Blu Ray zwischen 11 und 14 Euro, die für die normale DVD bei 8 bis 9,99 Euro.Auch die technischen Mängel an der Datenträgerumsetzung, die hier beschrieben wurden, kann ich nicht nachvollziehen. Also da würd ich einfach mal ein Softwareupdate am Player machen, das behebt die Probleme mit den meisten neuen Blu Ray Scheiben. Ist halt alles noch nicht ganz so ausgereift und von Hersteller zu Hersteller verschieden.
