If you have any of the Klein scout range with the toning function, this is a must have.The probe is powered by a 9v battery and is secured in a screwed compartment on the back. There is a quite powerful light on the front of it that is ultra handy when searching for cables in the back of patch panels. This can be turned on independently from the toning function.The volume level is controlled by two buttons and the highest levels is quite high and also can have a pair of headphones attached using a 3.5mm jack.The outer casing is very rugged and durable and does look like it will withstand a lot of use in all different kinds of environments.Overall, a very handy and well priced probe to pair with the Klein scout range.

Great tool , must have if you working in this environment, quality plastic, easy to use , not cheap but more quality then other hope it will work all the time no issue . Recommend

This is great for working with AV and Network cabling. We have recently moved into a heavily modernised 1960s house that has a lot of solid (rather than partition) walls and the previous owner had use a lot of cat 5 cabling for both data and Audi visual (HDMI over cat 5 distribution etc). Its says its designed to be used with a specific tone generator, but worked fine with an extent generator I already had that had a rubbish probe. The features on this are great allowing an analogue headphone to be used and also with a light tip which came in use several times. Its pretty straightforward to use and in fairness, you won't use this often at all, but Shen you do need it, it is invaluable.

Put simply, this works as it should. Volume is quite good but has a earphone socket for noisy areas. The tip is replaceable when it's worn down. The led light is adequate but not brilliant and works whether the probe is switched on or off. It's comfortable to hold and use.

I don’t know if the tone is quiet because of the Klein Scout Pro 3 which I used to generate the tone or this probe. It was difficult to identify un terminated wires (Cat 6 unshielded and coaxial) by touching the wires, the tone was barely audible by plugging in headphones. I could only get a very quiet tone by touching the end of the wires. For terminated wires the Scout Pro 3 was very effective using its remote units and it identified a few miss-wires on the Cat 6 sockets and RJ45s which I plugged into a Netgear (16 socket) Switch. In the end I got the job done with this tool, minus one star for the quiet tone and minus one star for being made in China even though Klein is proud of its USA heritage. I am pretty certain a cheap Chinese substitute would have done the same job.

Audio is very poor. Background interference needs to be filtered out.

Read my review of the Klein tester, I describe how this probe can't be used to identify shielded cables in bundles or to trace the signal for fault location along these cables. It may perform well on un-shielded cable. Unfortunately, it doesn't do as it is supposed to and I will return it.

Very helpful for tracing out network cables, Paris very well with the Klein Tools Scout Pro 3.
