I had never heard of this movie until recently, inspired to find more Jane Seymour films after watching her (again, after not having seen the film for decades) in _Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger_, wanting especially her work in the 1970s and 1980s. When I saw that Tom Selleck was in the film, during the early years of his _Magnum P.I._ days and the film was a period piece set during the 1930s, I was in!The movie is a heist film, set in London in 1939, just a few months before Germany invades Poland and World War II begins. Nick Lassiter is pretty well known in certain circles (local crooks and local police being that circle) as a cat burglar and a womanizing con man, one admired a bit perhaps, certainly respected by the local criminal peers of his, hated especially by a local police detective, one Inspector John Becker (played by Bob Hoskins of _Who Framed Roger Rabbit?_ fame) who knows Lassiter is a crook but hasn’t yet been able to put him away.Lassiter (pretty much never called Nick in the film that I can remember) is approached by Inspector Becker and an FBI agent by the name of Peter Breeze (pretty much called Breeze in the film, played by Joe Regalbuto) to steal $10 million dollars in diamonds from the German embassy before in a few days it goes to South America to fund Nazi operations on that continent. Lassiter refuses at first but is pretty much made an offer he can’t refuse and well, schemes to steal the diamonds by casing the joint, getting a few accomplices to help him, and romancing a woman who likes to socialize but lives at the embassy, a German woman by the name of Kari Von Fursten (played by Lauren Hutton). This woman is dangerous, as in an early scene she is shown murdering a man, someone Breeze and Becker have on the inside, though she also appears to enjoy it.That’s the movie pretty much, filled with meeting Lassiter’s many acquaintances, people who help him but sometimes also betray him, his evolving relationship with Breeze and with Becker, and the actual heist itself.I didn’t mention Jane Seymour, playing Lassiter’s girlfriend, Sara Wells, as though she is in a number of scenes and is positively radiant (wow she is gorgeous), she really doesn’t figure a lot in the story except for one scene where she briefly helps Lassiter scout out the embassy prior to his thievery and at the end of the film where she has a prominent role. I read one review that said she was wasted and she kind of was. Her acting was more than fine, she looked like she belonged in the time period, very attractive, but she could have been given a lot more to do, having her and Lassiter’s relationship be explored more, have her more prominent in the actual heist. Lassiter at times almost came off as annoyed by her when she (rightfully) complained about getting a real life started, one away from him being a cat burglar and con man.It was an ok film. There was some action but it was relatively low key, only one real extended fight scene and a few mildly interesting chase scenes. There were some nice double crosses but I think they were a little underwritten (or I didn’t like how much I the viewer was left in the dark about the details till it was over). The plot thread with Hutton’s character being dangerous was played up nicely at first but that storyline, sorry if this is a spoiler, was a huge let down at the end. The tone was mostly light during the film, maybe too light, but at times it was dark as well, not always blending nicely.It was just an ok film, it didn’t feel as memorable or as iconic as other 1980s period piece actiony films like the Indiana Jones films or _The Untouchables_. No really great lines, no super memorable scenes, no brilliant acting performances. Nothing bad, I don’t regret watching it, it was a lot of fun to see Jane Seymour and Tom Selleck in their youthful prime, but unlike say _High Road to China_, I don’t imagine watching this one again.

I don't remember where I first saw 'Lassiter', but I almost always see a movie on TV or at the theater before I buy a copy for my personal library. I'm glad to see this finally out on DVD - and with subtitles for the hearing impaired.The storyline might seem a little corny - blackmailing a known cat burglar to steal diamonds from a foreign embassy to disrupt Nazi operations in South America. But when you consider that during World War II British Intelligence actually dressed a dead body as a British officer and floated it onshore in Spain with phony letters suggesting the Allied invasion of southern Europe would be through Greece (instead of Sicily), and it worked . . . well, who knows. (It was known as operation Mincemeat.)What I liked about this movie was the set designs. They were so 1930s! Set designers don't get the credit they should. I particularly like the scenes at the nightclubs and on the train. And they had the cars right, also. Good set designs add a lot to any movie.The chemistry between Tom Selleck and Jane Seymour was good. And Bob Hoskins was great as the 'copper'. If there was a disappointment in the acting, it was Joe Regalbuto as the FBI agent. He came across as a wimp, and FBI agents just are not timid. But I would be remiss if I did not give credit to Lauren Hutton, who played a Nazi courier with a wild side.So when you put the acting and set designs together with the plot, you come up with a movie that's pretty entertaining. Enjoy.

Thief is in London and gets pressured by the local police and US FBI (which is weird as I thought the FBI was domestic and CIA was international but whatever) into getting some diamonds from the German embassy that the nazis are using to pay for their espionage around the world leading up to WWII. This is a period piece where they dress like they did back then. Anyway, it is kinda like a James Bond. Romancing to get info, lies, deception, sneaking around and in and out of windows, etc.Over all it was a good movie. There is some pretty unexpected violence in it. Some nudity (Jane Seymour is full on naked in this movie). And there are some twists and turns that surprise the viewer. Pretty decent. Never heard of it before. And Tom Selleck was never one that I really cared to watch on screen let alone Jane Seymour or Lauren Hutton. I also am so sick and over the entire nazis obsession of Hollywood. So maybe that is why I have never heard of this. But it was decent. Without the violence and nudity you would have thought this was a TV movie, I think.

Worked perfectly

This is an early Tom Selleck film, done about the time he was doing Magnum P.I. It's a period piece set in the days just before the beginning of WW II, and it is well written and the acting by Tom was his absolute best. Tom plays a high-end jewel thief who gets recruited by the british government and the America's FBI to steal some jewels from the German consulate in Britian, which the Germans plan to use towards their upcoming War effort. It has a great cast that includes Jane Seymour, Laren Hutton, and Bob Hoskins just to mention a few. This is the first time that this movie has been offered on DVD (something I have been waiting for, for years)and I hope it is followed up by a blu-ray version like they did with Tom Selleck's "High Road to China" which was also shot in about the same time period as "Lassiter" and another great period piece that Tom did. I highly recommend this film,especially if you are a Tom Selleck fan like I am, I promise you won't be dissappointed with it.

Der unter der Regie von Roger Young (Agent ohne Namen, 1988; Die Blutrache des Geronimo, 1993; Kiss the Sky, 1998) entstandene Film „Lassiter“ stammt aus dem Jahr 1984 und dürfte dem einen oder anderen noch unter dem Video-Titel „Tödliches Doppelspiel“ bekannt sein. Dabei hat sich Drehbuchautor David Taylor (Hanky Panky – Der Geisterflieger, 1982; Das Feuerschiff, 1985; Traveling Man, 1989) sichtlich an der von Cary Grant gespielten Figur John Robbie aus dem Hitchcock Klassiker „Über den Dächern von Nizza“ (1959) inspirieren lassen. Wie in diesem weltberühmten Klassiker spielt hier Tom Selleck die Rolle eines charmanten und attraktiven Juwelendiebs, der seine Fähigkeiten einsetzen muss um zu überleben. Jedoch hat man die Geschichte hier nach London in das Jahr 1939 versetzt.Juni 1939 – Kurz vor Ausbruch des 2. Weltkrieges pulsiert das Leben in der Londoner Metropole. Auch Nick Lassiter, ein geschickter amerikanischer Juwelendieb treibt hier sein Unwesen, sehr zum Leid von Inspector John Becker (Bob Hoskins), der diesem nichts nachweisen kann. Als Becker vom FBI jedoch erfährt dass in der deutschen Botschaft Diamanten im Wert von 10 Mio. USD lagern, die ein Kurier nach Südamerika bringen soll um den Aufbau einer Untergrund Organisation zu finanzieren sieht Becker seine Chance gekommen mit Lassiter abzurechnen. Mittels gefälschter Beweise zwingt er diesen in die deutsche Botschaft einzudringen und die Diamanten für England zu stehlen, andernfalls wandere er für mindestens 20 Jahre hinter Gittern. Da Lassiter dem knallharten Becker nicht entkommen kann sieht er sich gezwungen sich auf ein tödliches Doppelspiel einzulassen.Regisseur Roger Young, der bis dahin ausschließlich für das TV gearbeitet hat, bekam mit diesem Film seine große Chance. Mit einem Budget von ca. 17,5 Mio. USD (zum Vergleich der gut zwei Jahre früher entstandene Abenteuer Klassiker „Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes“ hatte ein Budget von ca. 18,0 Mio. USD) und einer Riege international bekannter Darsteller wie Bob Hoskins (Rififi am Karfreitag, 1980; Falsches Spiel mit Roger Rabbit, 1988; Duell – Enemy at the Gates, 2001), Jane Seymour (James Bond 007 – Leben und Sterben lassen, 1973; Das scharlachrote Siegel, 1982; Dr. Quinn – Ärztin aus Leidenschaft, TV-Serie 1993 – 1998), Lauren Hutton (Paper Lion, 1968; Ein Mann für gewisse Stunden, 1980; Malone, 1987), Joe Regalbuto (Vermisst, 1982; Der City Hai, 1986; Der Sizilianer, 1987), Ed Lauter (Der Todesritt der glorreichen Sieben, 1972; Nevada Pass, 1975; Death Wish III – Der Rächer von New York, 1985) und Warren Clarke (Uhrwerk Orange, 1971; Firefox, 1982; Top Secret, 1984) hatte er beste Voraussetzungen für einen ordentlichen Kino-Hit. Dazu kommt noch Top-Star Tom Selleck, der aufgrund seiner vertraglichen Verpflichtungen als „Magnum“ nicht in der Lage war die angebotene Rolle des Indiana Jones im Spielberg Film „Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes“ anzunehmen.Dass der Film dennoch nicht der erwartete Hit wurde dürfte an dem teils nicht ganz ausgereiften Drehbuch von David Taylor sowie einiger inszenatorischen Schwächen liegen. So ist beispielsweise die Figur von Lassiters Freundin Sara Wells, gespielt von Jane Seymour, einfach zu oberflächlich angelegt, (auch wenn Jane Seymour das Beste aus dieser Rolle macht und hinreißend aussieht). Die deutlich spektakulärere Rolle hat Lauren Hutton, die hier als Kari von Fursten - einer Mata Hari gleich - ebenso sexy wie tödlich ist. Lasziv und ohne Skrupel spielt sie ihre weiblichen Waffen aus. Eiskalt mordet sie genussvoll einen Liebhaber beim Liebesspiel mit einem Haar-Stilleto. (Eine Szene, die acht Jahre später in „Basic Instinct“ variiert und weltberühmt wurde.) Fantastisch auch der folgende Dialog, als Kari Lassiter kennenlernt und diesem auf den Zahn fühlt:Kari Von Fursten: Have you ever killed anyone, Mr. Lassiter?Nick Lassiter: Tell me about Berlin.Kari Von Fursten: Berlin... for me it is the only city. Diese stammen von niemand geringeren als Gilbert Taylor, der bei Klassikern wie „Dr. Seltsam, oder wie ich lernte die Bombe zu lieben“ (1964), „Das Omen“ (1976), „Star Wars IV – Krieg der Sterne“ (1977) oder auch „Flash Gordon“ (1980) hinter der Kamera stand und einen erheblichen Anteil an dem Erfolg dieser Werke hatte. Auch für den Soundtrack hat man einen der Großen seiner Zunft engagiert: Oscar Preisträger Ken Thorne, der 1966 für „Toll trieben es die alten Römer“ den begehrtesten Preis der Filmindustrie erhielt, aber auch bekannte Filme wie „Hannie Caulder – In einem Sattel mit dem Tod“ (1971), „Superman II – Allein gegen alle“ (1980) oder auch den „Protector“ (1985) brillant musikalisch unterlegt hat.Dennoch ist diesem Film kein großer Erfolg beschieden gewesen. In Deutschland wurde der Film gar erst 1987 als Videopremiere veröffentlicht. Auch wenn mich der Film nicht restlos überzeugt aufgrund einiger Drehbuchschwächen und einer teils verwirrenden Handlung, so ist dieser Film schon allein aufgrund der Darsteller äußerst interessant und kann mit stimmungsvollen Bildern punkten. Auch die Szenen als Tom Selleck wie einst Cary Grant über die Dächer schleicht sind eine tolle Reminiszenz an diesen Klassiker.Die DVD Veröffentlichung von der SchröderMedia Handelsgesellschaft ist in jedem Fall als ordentlich zu bezeichnen. Das Bild ist im Originalformat 1,78:1 (16:9 anamorph). Das Bild ist aus meiner Sicht technisch vollkommen in Ordnung und nicht zu beanstanden. Als Sprachoptionen stehen Deutsch und Englisch jeweils im Tonformat Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono zur Verfügung. Untertitel gibt es leider keine. Genauso wenig wie irgendwelche Extras. Nur ein Wendecover ohne FSK-Logo wurde dieser Veröffentlichung spendiert.

Kann man angucken, aber nicht der stärkste Film von Mr. Magnum.

The movie is a period film that you need to watch at least twice to get it

This is a gerat film and really well acted. Tom Selleck, often much maligned for his 'Magnum' hero figure, shows he can indeed act. Jane Seymour also puts in a good shift as leading lady. The plot twists and turns as it unwinds and the pace never lets up. This one will keep you guessing right through until the end, when a final surprise is round the corner. As entertainment value, this film has it all...action, beauty, suspense, thrills and (just a little) of romance. Definitely one of my favourite films with Tom Selleck in (along with Three Men and a Baby). Worth 9/10 in my evaluation for entertainment, though can be a little pricey as it is not that easy to get hold of.

London im Jahre 1939. Nick Lassiter, ein Juwelendieb, wird verhaftet. Man stellt ihn vor die Wahl, entweder er erledigt einen heiklen Auftrag und kommt frei oder er landet für 20 Jahre im Gefängnis. Nick soll dafür aus der deutschen Botschaft Diamanten im Wert von 10 Millionen Dollar stehlen. Denn die Nazis wollen die Diamanten nach Brasilien schaffen, um mit dem Erlös einen Spionagering aufzubauen. Sollten die Deutschen Nick erwischen, wäre dies sein sicheres Todesurteil. Nicks Freundin Sarah gefällt die Sache überhaupt nicht. Sie ist rät Nick zur Aufgabe des Planes. Doch dieser kann nicht mehr zurück und will seinerseits die Diamanten selbst behalten. Aber die Deutschen haben inzwischen einen Verdacht. Doch Nick ist sehr gerissen und so nehmen die Dinge ihren Lauf.Aber Achtung bei dem Film: Unter "Tödliches Doppelspiel" ist der Film in den frühen 90er Jahren nochmal auf VHS erschienen, allerdings in einer stark gekürzten Fassung mit nur 90 Minuten. Achtet darauf, wenn ihr euch das Video zulegen möchtet, dass ihr den Film unter dem Titel "LASSITER" kauft, denn nur der ist UNCUT. Die Rechte an der deutschen Version hatte damals eine recht kleine Videofirma. Aufgrund dieser Rechteprobleme gibt es den Film leider nicht auf DVD, wie so manche andere Klassiker auch. Schade :-( Denn LASSITER ist ein absolut sehenswerter Film. Er hat zwar einige Längen und kam damals im Kino auch nicht ganz so gut an, aber für Fans von Tom Selleck und Liebhaber des Genres ein absolutes muss. Der Film eine amüsante Gaunerkomödie mit einem brillanten Tom Selleck. Tom drehte den Kinofilm von 1983 in einer Magnum-Drehpause. Selleck hatte in seinem Vertrag eine Klausel, dass er in Drehpausen Kinofilme annehmen darf, sofern ihm einer zusagt.
