Any recommendations on this vs a typical alaskan or granberg mill?

In terms of guide points, Alaskan jigs work something like a band saw and this is like a jigsaw. I have an Alaskan and it cuts 24 inch widths flat within 1/4 inch.

What is the difference between this mill and Granberg? http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B002VA3G3A

Granberg is a cutting system with more bells and whistles designed to improve sawing accuracy and productivity.

Is it possible to split the log down the middle

I've used my Stihl 066 Magnum and Stihl 441C to halve BIG logs (36 and 20 inch bars respectively) to halve huge logs. You want POWER and very sharp chains. I use star drive wood screws to attach flat strap steel (I used free concrete form straps) to the plank guide, and to the trunk for alignment. Just bend the mild steel straps to get everything aligned, and go for it. Be sure not to hit dirt, you can always trim off an inch of rough stuff where it finally splits. That OR roll the log onto pallets or small trunk pieces to get it off the ground

will my stihl farm boss work with this mill

Yes, no problem. The jig will install to any chainsaw.
