Gold leaf is gold that has been hammered into extremely thin sheets and is used for gilding, artwork, picture frames, statuary, as well as being used architecturally for ceilings, walls, and external structures such as spires and domes. It is also commonly used for signs and religious icons, and historically used for gilding, or illuminating, manuscripts. Gold leaf can be applied to almost any material that has been treated with an adhesive, known as size. Gold leaf is sold in gold leaf books, with 25 leaves packaged in a book, each on a separate sheet of paper. A pack of gold leaf is 20 books of 25 leaves, or 500 leaves total. Each gold leaf is incredibly thin, and extremely fragile. It crumbles to the touch if not handled properly, and will vanish if rubbed in to the palm of your hand.
